Independent Olympic Athletes at the London Olympics 2012

What does that even mean? That they aren’t representing a country? How does that work?

It means their countries don’t have an Olympic Committee. In this case the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved in 2010, so they lost theirs, and South Sudan declared independence in 2011, so they haven’t formed one yet. Individuals who qualified can still compete, but I guess it means the country itself doesn’t get credit for any medals or whatever.

The same thing happens if a country is banned from participating.

I hope these guys win all the awards they’re legally allowed to, and then some.
